IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa community is mourning the loss of former Hawkeye volleyball player Kari (Mueller) Pekar, who passed away on June 10, 2026, following a courageous battle with cancer. She was 33 years old.
Pekar is remembered not only for her contributions to Iowa volleyball but also for her strength, determination, compassion, and dedication to helping others throughout her life. News of her passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences from former teammates, coaches, friends, and members of the Hawkeye community who were inspired by her resilience and positive spirit.
A native of Iowa City, Pekar built an impressive volleyball career long before arriving on the University of Iowa campus. During her time at Iowa City High School, she earned all-state honors as a senior and established herself as one of the school’s most accomplished athletes. She finished her prep career as City High’s all-time leader in career digs, showcasing the work ethic and competitive drive that would define her athletic journey.
Pekar continued her volleyball career at the University of Iowa from 2011 to 2014. During her four seasons as a Hawkeye, she appeared in more than 20 matches each year and became a dependable contributor to the program. Over the course of her collegiate career, she played in 93 matches and made 17 starts.
She concluded her Iowa career with 357 digs, 33 assists, and 17 service aces, earning the respect of teammates and coaches for her commitment, consistency, and team-first attitude. Whether on the court during matches or supporting teammates behind the scenes, Pekar embodied the values of dedication and perseverance that define Hawkeye athletics.
Following graduation in 2015, Pekar continued her commitment to helping others by pursuing a career in healthcare. She earned her nursing degree from Kirkwood Community College in 2018, dedicating herself to serving patients and making a meaningful difference in the lives of those facing medical challenges.
Her transition from student-athlete to healthcare professional reflected her compassionate nature and desire to care for others. Friends and colleagues describe her as someone who approached every challenge with courage, empathy, and unwavering determination.
In 2022, Kari married former University of Iowa football tight end Peter Pekar. Together, they built a life centered on family, friendship, and shared values. Throughout her battle with cancer, she continued to inspire those around her with her strength, grace, and positive outlook.
The University of Iowa Athletics Department honored Pekar’s memory by recognizing her accomplishments as both an athlete and an alumna whose legacy extends far beyond statistics and competition.
While her passing leaves a tremendous void, those who knew Kari find comfort in the memories she created, the lives she touched, and the example she set through her perseverance and kindness.
A celebration of Kari Pekar’s life will be held on July 30, 2026, in Brookfield, Wisconsin, where family, friends, former teammates, and loved ones will gather to honor her memory and celebrate a life that inspired so many.
Kari (Mueller) Pekar will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
